How to Tell What Face Shape You Have: 3 Simple Methods

Discover your face shape in minutes with these proven methods. From the mirror test to AI analysis, find out if you're oval, round, square, or heart-shaped.

Knowing your face shape is the foundation of choosing flattering hairstyles, glasses, and makeup. But how do you actually tell what shape you have? Here are three reliable methods that take just minutes.

Method 1: The mirror trace test

This is the quickest visual method. You need a mirror, a dry-erase marker or lipstick, and good lighting.

Stand directly in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back. Keep your face relaxed and look straight ahead. Using the marker, trace the outline of your face on the mirror — from your hairline down around your jaw and back up the other side.

Step back and look at the shape you traced:

  • Oval — The outline is longer than it is wide, like an egg standing upright, with a gently curved jaw.
  • Round — Nearly circular, with soft curves and similar width and length.
  • Square — A strong, angular jawline with a straight hairline. Width and length are similar.
  • Heart — Wide at the forehead and cheekbones, narrowing to a pointed chin.
  • Oblong — Noticeably longer than it is wide, like a stretched oval.
  • Diamond — Widest at the cheekbones, narrow at the forehead and chin.

Method 2: The measurement approach

For a more precise answer, take four measurements with a soft measuring tape:

  1. Forehead width — Measure across your forehead at its widest point
  2. Cheekbone width — Measure across your face at the cheekbones
  3. Jawline width — Measure from chin tip to jaw angle, then double it
  4. Face length — Measure from hairline center to chin tip

Compare your numbers:

  • Forehead, cheeks, and jaw similar width + face length 1.5× width = Oval
  • All measurements similar + soft curves = Round
  • All measurements similar + angular jaw = Square
  • Forehead widest, then cheeks, then jaw = Heart
  • Face length much greater than width = Oblong
  • Cheeks widest, forehead and jaw narrow = Diamond

Method 3: Instant AI detection

The fastest and most accurate method? Upload a photo to an AI Face Shape Detector. The tool analyzes your facial proportions in seconds and identifies your shape — no measuring tape or marker needed.

The AI method is particularly useful because it:

  • Removes human measurement error
  • Gives you precise ratio breakdowns
  • Shows you exactly where your proportions fall
  • Works from any clear front-facing photo

What to do once you know

Once you identify your shape, you can:

  1. Choose hairstyles that balance your proportions
  2. Select glasses frames that complement your face
  3. Apply makeup strategically to enhance your features
  4. Grow or shape facial hair (for men) in flattering ways

For even deeper insights, try a full Face Report that analyzes your proportions, symmetry, and features together — giving you a complete picture of your facial structure and personalized styling recommendations.

Your face shape is just the starting point. Understanding it helps every styling decision work with your natural features instead of against them.
