Canthal tilt is a measure of how the outer corner of your eye sits relative to the inner corner. It is one of the most-discussed metrics in facial aesthetics, because the angle of the eye has a big influence on how alert, approachable, and "balanced" a face reads. The three tilts explained

Positive tilt. The outer corner of the eye sits higher than the inner corner. Most people associate this with an awake, youthful, lifted appearance. It is the angle most commonly called "ideal," though plenty of attractive faces have other tilts.

Neutral tilt. The inner and outer corners are level with each other. This is a calm, even look that many people have naturally.

Negative tilt. The outer corner sits lower than the inner corner. This can read as tired or downward in some photos, but it is also a completely normal facial trait — and it is not a "defect."

A small note on the name: the popular term for the outer corner is the "canthus," so a negative canthal tilt means the outer canthus drops below the inner one. You will sometimes see it written as "cant" — the correct spelling is canthal.

How to measure canthal tilt

You can estimate it by drawing an imaginary line through the inner and outer corners of the eye and comparing the angle to horizontal:

Why the eye angle matters
